Clearwater is the county office of Pinellas County. However, the largest city in the county is St. Petersburg.
Clear water is especially known as a beach resort and a cold-weather area because it has a mild climate throughout the year and a beach in the Gulf of Mexico with high water temperatures. It is also very popular among the Leitai as one of the destinations.
The Scientology headquarters is located in the downtown area of Clearwater. As a result, the city is also known as a mecca for scientology and is the second largest city where many believers live after Los Angeles.
History
In the past, there were native Americans of the Tocobagan tribe living in this area. Around 1835, during the Seminole War, the United States Army built Fort Harrison on a cliff looking for the port of Clearwater. Today, the area where the fort was located is called Harbor Oaks.
In 1842, when the United States government passed a bill to give the settlers some 750,000m² (160 acres) of land, the population started to increase rapidly. Before long this place came to be called Clearwater Harbor. The name Clearwater came from the fact that there was a spring near the place where the city hall was now built and there was a spring of water. In addition to the spring that became the origin of the city name, the water quality in the neighborhood was very good because there were springs near the Clearwater Bay and in the bay.
In 1849, the first road connecting Tampa and Clearwater was completed. With the completion of the road, the travel time between these two cities, which had been a one-day journey, was reduced significantly. In 1859, the first post office in Pinellas County was established at Clearwater.
During the Civil War, most of the men of Clearwater went to the battlefield as soldiers of the Southern Army, so the supplies in the city that had become scarce were targeted and often attacked by the Northern Army. In 1888, Henry B. Plant (Henry B. With the opening of the railroad by Plant), clear water has rapidly grown. In 1891, Clearwater became a formal town. In 1897, a resort hotel called Bellevue Biltmore was built by the plant. With the construction of the hotel, clear water became recognized as a tourist spot.
In the early 1900s, the population of clear water was about 400. During the winter sightseeing season, the number of visitors was nearly 1,000. On May 27, 1915, Clearwater was promoted to the city and became the district office of Pinellas County. In the same year, a bridge was built across the Clearwater Port, connecting an offshore sandbank (the present Clearwater Beach) and Clearwater.
During World War II, Clearwater became a training ground for soldiers heading to the European Front and the Pacific Front. Almost all the hotels in the city, including Bellevue Biltmore and Fort Harrison Hotel, became the barracks of the recruits. The cars running in the city passed the marching troops first. There were frequent blackouts to distract the enemy. Dan's Island, an off-shore sandbank located south of Clearwater Beach, was used as a training ground for machine gun shooting and bombing. Danz Island is now a park called Sand Key.
